Pmads and motherhood: What to expect

Hello, my name is Bernadette Hubbs and I am a licensed professional counselor (LPC) and founder of Nurturing Women. My company was created to provide Women’s wellness services with a special focus on Perinatal Mental health, and my goal is to assist area Hospitals, OB/GYNs, Midwives and Pediatricians in using best practices when assessing moms for Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders. The U.S. Preventative Task Force recently released thier recommendations for Postpartum Depression. Their #1 recommendation is to refer any patients who may be at risk for anxiety or depression for psychotherapy.

Studies show that Anxiety and Depression affects 1 in 7 moms.  Many times, these conditions go unnoticed because moms may not feel comfortable or safe to share how they are truly feeling during their office follow-ups.  This leads to many moms being left untreated or misdiagnosed.

This is especially true if they are experiencing scary or distressing thoughts; in fear that they will be misunderstood or judged. When moms do not feel safe to share their thoughts, they hide them, which can make it more difficult to gain a true assessment of their mental health status.

Please note that PMADs do not only affect Postpartum moms. Research has shown that women who develop anxiety and/or depression before or during pregnancy have a higher chance of encountering those same symptoms during the postpartum period. Please view my “Services” page to gain specific information about my treatment areas.

As a licensed therapist, I can work closely with your facility or office to provide informational sessions and trainings on methods to quickly identify the presence of PMADs in your patients.  I also treat women anywhere along their Perinatal Journey, and work with moms on bed-rest who may be experiencing anxiety, along with High Risk prenatal patients. Receiving psychotherapy has been shown to reduce symptoms and help women regain a sense of wellness again.

Offering a comprehensive wellness plan is one of the best ways to help support your patients.

I look forward to meeting with you or your office staff to discuss the ways that I can assist you and your patients.
